Towns and villages in the Ardennes

AMBERLOUP

1. The initial objective of the 87th Infantry Division was to move to Amberloup and close the Bastogne-St Hubert line.

2. By January 12th the 87th Division had reached it’s objective.

BONNERUE

1. On January 2nd the 3rd Battalion, 347th Regiment, entered Bonnerue.

2. On January 6th and 7th the 345th took over the battle for Bonnerue.

3. On January 11th the 347th Regiment finally cleared Bonnerue.

FREUX-MENIL

1. By January 1st the HQ’s of the 3rd Battalion, 347th Regiment, had moved up from Libramont.

GERIMONT

1. On January 5th, the 1st Battalion, 347th Regiment captured Gerimont.

JENNEVILLE

1. Jenneville is a small village between Moircy and Pirompre.

2. On January 2nd the 3rd Battalion, 347th Regiment, entered Jenneville.

3. Company C, 345th had previously suffered heavy losses in Jenneville.

4. On January 5th the 3rd Battalion reported heavy German attacks in Jenneville.

5. By January. 10th Jenneville was clear of German troops.

PIROMPRE

1. Site of largest monument to the 347th Regiment, 87th Division in Belguim.

2. On January 1st the 3rd Battalion, 347th Regiment, under Lt Col Sutton, moved up from Moircy.

3. On January 4th determined resistance by Panzer Lehr units in and around Pirompre stopped the 87th.

4. On January 11th the 347th Regiment finally captured Pirompre.

MOIRCY

1. By December 30th the 345th was in pitched battle in Moircy.

2. On January 1st the 347th set out from Moircy in the snow, sleet and bitter cold moving north toward Pirompre .

3. By January 2nd the 2nd Battalion 345th Regiment had captured Moircy.

REMAGNE

1. On January 1st the 1st Battalion, 345th Regiment, captured Remagne.

ST HUBERT

1. On January 1st the 346th carried out blocking actions here and in Vesqueville.

2. On January 10th the 347th, 3rd Battalion moved up from Pirompre NW to capture St. Hubert.

TILLET and the HAIES DE TILLET WOODS

1. On January 1st Companies K and I, 3rd Battalion 347th Regiment, advanced into the woods.

2. Lt. Col. Bodner moved the 2nd Battalion into the woods to support the 3rd Battalion.

3. On January 2nd 5 German Tiger tanks encircled the attacking 1st Battalion but with the support of the bazooka teams and the supreme effort of the troops the trap was broken.

4. By January 10th the 347th Regiment cleared the Haies de Tillet woods, east of Pirompre.

5. By January 11th Tillet was finally captured by the 346th regiment.

Note:

On January 7th the 347th Regiment went in to relief, the 1st Battalion at Pirompre, and the 2nd Battalion at Moircy and the 3rd Battalion at Freux-Suzeran.  They returned to combat on January 9th
