The Road of Liberty

The Road of Liberty

The road

The road of Liberty was inaugurated in August of 1946.  During the War, it had been one of the routes followed by the Allied forces.  The chosen itinerary is definitely one of the most glorious ones, as it was the famous route followed by General Patton's 3rd US Army.  This road of Victory and Liberation was realized on the initiative of Commander Guy de Vasselais, the former Chief of the French military Mission for the tactical joining of the 20th Corps with the 3rd US Army, who wished to commemorate the Liberation with a magnificent monument.  Each kilometer of this "Holy Road" connecting St Mére-Eglise (Normandy) and Bastogne (Belgium) (1.145 kilometers) is indicated by a symbolic marker.
