Summary:

The Mortarmen is the epic and never before told story of the 87th Chemical Mortar Battalion. The men of the 87th landed on Utah Beach on D-Day with their 4.2" mortars and quickly became one of the most sought after fire support units in the European Theater of Operations (ETO).
They fought for 326 straight days and were in almost every major battle in France, Belgium, and Germany. Their mortars placed devastating fire on the enemy from the beaches of Normandy to the Cherbourg Peninsula, and from Aachen and the Hurtgen Forest to the Battle of the Bulge.
In this 292 page book you'll read their story presented as if it comes from today's headlines. You'll hear from the men who were there and see the pictures they took, many of which have never been published before. You'll also hear from some German soldiers who faced the 87th in battle.

Veterans of the 87th and others speak out about "The Mortarmen"

The author has performed admirably in depicting the complete story of the 87th Mortar BN from training camps thru D-Day and the entire WWII operations in Europe.
A great contribution to WWII History, comparable to Stephen Ambrose's story of E Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne Division in "Band of Brothers".

"The Mortarmen is an important addition to the historical books documenting World War Two in Europe , not only for its meticulous and accurate research and its general readability, but because for the first time it documents the impact the very powerful and accurate 4.2 inch mortar had in bringing this terrible conflict to a close. The Mortarman also documents the men of the 87 CMB, their sacrifices and commitment to get the job done. It is one of the finest books on the Second World War that I have read.

An outstanding book and a great tribute to the American Mortarmen of WWII. A must for everyone who is interested in military history.
"The Mortarmen" fills a gap in WWII history,-never before was the importance of the Chemical Mortar Battalions on the battlefield described in such a clear and highly readable way.
A book that is highly recommended!!!

I browsed your book first, and now am reading it line by line slowly.
You have done the most wonderful job in the writing, You have brought back all the feelings, the fear, the wonder, the comradeship; all of those
feelings and more. I thank you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"This is an important book because it tells, for the first time, the history of the critical role of this group of 4 mortar companies of men, of the 87th Mortar Battalion, which was positioned just behind the front lines, giving direct support to the infantry companies or battalions that had critical assignments in World War II.
This book is must reading for those interested in the full history of WW II.

What a great job you did putting all this historical data together; weaving the whole thing with personal, anecdotal recollections and whipping the whole thing into an informative and entertaining historical document.
H.R. "Bob" Loomis
Sgt. "D" Company

Michael,
Thank you so much for writing this book about the 87th CMB. My uncle, William Stanley Collins, a member of the 87th, was killed in combat July 4, 1944 in Normandy.
The price of freedom is not free. It was paid for dearly by the blood and sacrifices of our armed forces.
"The Mortarmen" will be treasured by our family. May these true American heroes never be forgotten.
